Exactly one orthogonal hazard pair
Choose 3, 4 or 5 hazards on a 4×4 board. Exactly one unordered pair of hazards shares a horizontal or vertical edge across the entire board. Diagonal contacts do not count. All other hazards have no orthogonal hazard neighbour. All 232, 768 or 1064 legal layouts respectively are equally likely; one stays fixed throughout the round.
Expected return and variance
Exact expected return is 97% for permitted stopping policies. The initial 3% reduction is applied once; conditional safe-branch compensation preserves expectation. Choosing coordinates or stopping changes risk and variance, not this expectation. A short session is not guaranteed to match it.

What is the single-pair rule?
Choose 3, 4 or 5 hazards on a 4×4 board. Exactly one unordered pair of hazards shares a horizontal or vertical edge across the entire board. Diagonal contacts do not count. All other hazards have no orthogonal hazard neighbour. All 232, 768 or 1064 legal layouts respectively are equally likely; one stays fixed throughout the round.
How is value calculated?
Live value starts at 0.97 times the virtual stake. A safe reveal divides it by that cell’s exact conditional safe probability among the remaining compatible legal layouts. A hazard ends the round with zero return. Reveals change knowledge, not the hidden layout.
How do odds change after a reveal?
With 3 hazards, an initial corner is safe in 192 of 232 layouts, an edge cell away from a corner in 187 of 232, and a centre cell in 188 of 232. From a 20-coin stake a safe corner gives 20×0.97/(192/232), about 23.442 coins; a safe centre gives about 23.940 coins. Observations update compatible layouts, so later probabilities may rise or fall. Initial odds are not uniformly 13/16.
